BELL RINGERS

BELL RINGERS

For the first time ever, Second Congo’s hand bell choir hosted the annual gathering of Vermont hand bell ringers. Our Director Sue Green and her Jubellaire Ringers took a major role in organizing the 2018 Spring Ring that brought 190 bell ringers to Bennington. At the Middle School, rehearsals for the 4pm concert were interspersed with workshops that included special hand bell techniques, ukelele workshops led by Second Congo’s Music Director Matt Edwards, hand drumming led by Jay Sager, and dancing the Virginia Reel with hand bells. Refreshments for the morning gathering, lunch, and the breaks mid-morning and mid-afternoon were provided by SCC’s Jane Norrie, Ginny Ray, Norma McShane and Barbara French.

Celebrating Mary

CELEBRATING MARY

Celebrating Mary Lee Clark’s 23 years as pastor of Second Congregational Church, on her retirement April 15, worship was glorious with music by the chancel choir, hand bell choir, Gospel choir and by Music Director Matt Edwards on organ and piano. Communion was celebrated, Mary was released from her vows as pastor, and she was presented with books of photos and memories of her time as pastor, a hand-made quilt, a floral promise of a video of congregation members and friends telling their memories, and a box of chocolates together with gifts from the congregation towards her retirement travel. Following worship, the luncheon in Webster Hall featured lasagna and salad, a delicious cake made and decorated by Dara Lindley, and tributes by Tom Steffen and Ernie Lafontaine to Mary and her family.

Cindy Hudson-Knapp researched “silhouettes of angels” and printed out a variety. The installation required a lot of scissor-action, then hanging the angel cut-outs on Christmas ornament hangers and suspending them from delicate gauze fabric that …

“The Rabbi’s Gift–Full Circle”– Philippians 1:3-11b, Luke 24:36b-48– April 15, 2018

I told a story one of my first Sundays here. There are many versions of this story, but I first read it in M. Scott Peck’s book A Different Drum. It’s called “The Rabbi’s Gift,” which is appropriate today, because I’ve received many gifts from the rabbis from Congregation Beth El whom I’ve known over the years–first Howard Cohen, then …

“Last…First….Still”- Mark 16:1-8– Easter, April 1, 2018

Did you catch that ending to Mark’s story of the Resurrection? So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. That’s it?! They said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid? No Jesus sightings? No encounters in the garden or on the road …
